"Conceived by Hunters for Hunters" is both the philosophy and reality of the Hunting Retriever Club, Inc. ("HRC"). HRC Clubs hold over 200 licensed Hunt Tests each year. HRC maintains its common sense, hunting realism in testing hunting retrievers. There are five ability-based (not age) categories that dogs may enter in the HRC Tests: Started, Seasoned, Finished, Grand and Upland. Prairie Lakes HRC, based in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, officially began in spring 2006. The club trained informally for about 1-1/2 years prior. The club generally meets for training sessions and meetings once weekly during the summer, either Wednesday evenings or an agreed upon time on weekends. Prairie Lakes HRC currently holds one officially hunt testing day annually, and two fun hunt tests. Hunt tests are held at the Elk Lake Heritage Preserve grounds, just north of Hoffman, Minnesota. Membership in Prairie Lakes HRC is open to all people who own, breed, or are simply interested in hunting retrievers. HRC is family-oriented, offering outdoor fun and camaraderie to participants. The Constitution and By-Laws of HRC set guidelines for affiliation with national dog registries. HRC is affiliated with the United Kennel Club and has no affiliation with another national dog registry. HRC and UKC work together toward common goals, such as standardizing tests at various HRC hunts, developing rules and regulations, and registry of dogs by their DNA components. HRC supports the protection of wild game birds through controlled hunts and conservation/management techniques. The HRC works to preserve the right to bear arms, hunt and to breed and promote the retriever breed of their choice and, by using its Constitution and By-Laws, accomplishes its tasks effectively.
