Floden Farm began in 2003, when we purchased some acreage just south of Wendell. Our first crop was a batch of field corn. Our small acreage now supports a homegrown garden, a soybean crop, a family of chickens, two kittens, golden retrievers, a yellow labrador retriever, and our five children who sometimes enjoy taking part in helping raise our animals and harvest the garden.

Rest in Peace.
You are missed!
June 30, 2002 - May, 2006

We have acquired two new golden retriever puppies and a yellow labrador retriever puppy since.

In the spring of 2004, "Pa" decided it was time to raise chickens, and so we turned the small red granary into a chicken coop for free range chickens. Fencing was added along the back of the red granary to help discourage predators, although you will see several chickens roaming in the front side yard and getting into Ma's flowerbed on a nice day. In April, about 100 meat chickens arrived and the Flodens drove to Lowry, Minn. to pick up the chicks. The remaining 25 Rhode Island Red chicks, purchased for laying brown eggs, arrived by U.S. postal mail in May.

Our chickens have been laying eggs for several months now, and so our two oldest kids have decided to sell our brown, Rhode Island Red chicken eggs to the public. Their goal, so they say, is to raise some money for college. They started selling in 2005 at the ages of 9 and 7 years, so we guess it's possible. Although organic eggs can cost as much as four times what customers pay for conventional eggs, our brown eggs are priced at just $2/dozen. We are not "certified organic;" we're a small hobby farm that grow chickens and harvest eggs mainly for ourselves. To become certified organic to include the term organic on our labeling with the seal of being organic would cost a fee of about $240, and that's not very cost-effective for our small flock of about 20 hens. We are happy to supply our neighboring customers with the extra eggs our natural, totally free-range chickens produce!

We don't use chemicals or hormones, and our chickens range freely. We avoid trying to use antibiotics when possible. Our chickens do receive flax seed as a treat. It aids their digestion and gives them a nice, shiny coat. Chickens producing eggs that receive flax seed meal are known to produce eggs rich in omega-3 oil.

We also have a couple Jumbo Cornish Rock, Americauna, and tophat chickens laying, and so you may receive various sizes and varying shades of brown eggs, blue-green eggs from the Americaunas, and an occasional white egg. The Cornish Rocks, we've found, lay some lighter brown eggs so large and with double yolks that they hardly fit in a Jumbo Egg Carton! (We've had some so large we weren't able to close the carton completely.) Most of our Rhode Islands lay medium to large sized eggs. All are delicious and flavorful from being so fresh!

Floden Farm is located 3-4 miles south of and about 2 miles west of Wendell at 27736 County Road 1E, Wendell MN. We're just a country (highway) drive from Ashby, Barrett, Boisberg, Campbell, Charlesville, Elbow Lake, Evansville, Fairmount, Fergus Falls, Foxhome, French, Herman, Hoffman, Melby, Norcross, Tenney, Tintah, Underwood, Wahpeton, Wendell and Western. We just are just an hour's drive from Fargo, North Dakota.

We are currently accepting meat orders for free range, natural chicken and turkeys. Our poultry is hormone-free. Our next butcher date for chickens should be around October or November 2005! We have our meats processed at a USDA inspected nearby butcher. Nope, you won't see Ma running after headless birds in our yard. Turkeys may be butchered in November or December for your holiday meal. If you visit us to place your order soon enough, you can even choose which bird will be on your holiday platter. We accept credit cards by telephone or online. Meats are priced at the "market price" per pound at the time of butchering.

If you'd like fresh eggs delivered, please call for pricing and have your credit or debit card ready. Pricing will vary upon number of dozens ordered, location, and handling fee. (The handling fee is because Ma or Pa need to get involved in packaging and driving.)

We've just received our adorable top hat chicks on July 21, 2005! These are a variety of crested birds, and we also ordered some Black Stars and Single Comb Brown Leghorns. You can see the "fluff" on the tops of their heads. Most of these chickens will lay us white eggs in 2006. All are welcome to stop out and visit our babies. Just call so we'll be here to show them off.

Our crested birds we received in July 2005 have really grown fast!

Our baby turkeys and guinea fowl have also just arrived. (Their hatch date was August 2, 2005.)

More brown egg layers arrived August 22. We now have Buff Orpingtons and Aracaunas (Easter Egg Chickens). Aracaunas lay colored eggs. This week was an exciting one, as we incubated and hatched some new Rhode Island Reds! See below for the photos and a hatching video!
